Bath, incorporated in 1705, is North Carolina's oldest town. The town's location on a bluff overlooking the juncture of Bath and Back Creeks, only a mile from the Pamlico River, seemed ideal as a port and settlement, with easy access to the river and the Atlantic Ocean 50 miles away at Ocracoke Inlet. In legend it was the "home" of Blackbeard the Pirate, when he was not threatening commerce on the waters around Bath and the Pamlico Sound. Today, Bath remains a small, tranquil village with old town charm and friendly people.

According to historians, the name is derived from the Tuscaroran Indians who lived here several hundred years ago and means "fish from many waters."
Chocowinity is home to Cypress Landing, one of the premiere golf and boating communities in Beaufort County and a favorite with the actively-retired.
